Sustainability has offered so much in recent years. Eco-friendly plans are well appreciated by everyone. We have covered a lot about slow fashion and its environmentally friendly impacts. The aspect we look into nowadays is how people can make sustainability reach the next level. Have you ever wondered what percentage of people are using second-hand apparel and fashion apparatus? If we look into the statistics then we can see almost 73% of millennials prefer shopping from sustainable brands. Fashion is considered to be the second among the list who are actively polluting nature and the demise of fast fashion is now just a matter of time.

We are focusing on the rise of Re-commerce. As pandemic is transforming itself into a never-ending story the growth of e-commerce is bound to be the next big thing. It has approximately earned a total revenue of $24 so far and is expected to increase its revenue digits to $51 billion by the end of the year 2023. The maximum of the products is bought by the recent generation. They are solely buying these clothes to actively participate in rescuing the environment.

Let us look more closely at what re-commerce means. According to Wikipedia, Re-commerce or reverse commerce refers to the process of selling previously owned, new, or used products to consumers willing to buy them after examining everything. The products are very cheap and often the customers are satisfied with the quality of the products they purchase. Shops that sell used products or second-hand materials are sometimes called thrift shops. New Balance joined this initiative and they started re-selling their used products or products that were given back due to some flaws found by the people who purchased them. New Balance transformed and fixed every issue with the assistance of the used clothing store The Renewal Workshop. They are collaborating for the promotion of the ‘’New Balance Renewed” project.

The products that had flaws or returned are re-designed and are put up for sale. New Balance sells products with a price range of $15 to $120 and is available now on the Renewal E-commerce website. New Balance has a variety of items to resell which includes their Knit training jackets, shirts, shorts, pullovers, and performance wear for both genders. New Balance has received a lot of appreciation as they are a renowned brand that has practiced sustainability in their fashion and has added greater value to reverse commerce.

John Stakes (Director of global sustainability at New Balance) shared some valuable information in an interview. He said that this brand is continuously learning and revolutionizing its way of working to design and create durable products. In April 2021, designers at New Balance were trained to design their products in such a way that will make them busy repairing them later as their focus is to prepare them in a way that has intentional flaws.

New Balance has always been producing sustainable products and is actively working to save the environment. Increasing longevity and the partnership with the Renewal workshop has resulted fruitful for the brand as the renewed products attracted their customers.

The website contains a lot of information about the renewed products and is constantly trying to improve. They have badges set for customers to identify the renewed products along with New Balance’s original collection.

The renewal system has six steps before re-selling the products. First, they sort out the garments. Secondly, they grade the garments. Then they thoroughly clean and make the necessary changes to establish the standard. Before re-selling the products, an inspection is done by both New Balance and The Renewal Workshop.

The co-founder of the renewal workshop, Mr. Nicole Basset believes that the inclusion of New Balance Renewed will boost the main aim of their company to a great extent. He also thinks that New Balance has given birth to reverse commerce and people will appreciate it more shortly.

Other brands in the world are also working actively to promote the resale of products. For instance, Lululemon released its white-glove resell in collaboration with Trove (A re-commerce service provider).

Women’s New Balance recovery shoes are one to watch out for as they are very stylish and trending. The features are pointed out below:

  • The production is done by using 100% synthetic fibers.
  • The sneakers’ sole is made of rubber.
  • There is a brilliant addition of CUSH+MIDSOLE.
  • There are no tie laces.
  • They have a different range of colors which includes- blue, silver, pink, purple, and many more.

As reverse commerce is getting popular quite briskly, traditional retail stores that sell original collections are in danger. Customers are buying more second-hand clothes as it is very much affordable and the quality of the product is ensured. Although, there are many other ways on how they can retain their customers. The ways are described below:

  • Practicing and promoting sustainable methods: As people are becoming much more aware of the environment, retailers who ensure sustainability in their approach can become very successful in the long run. Also, they will get the motivation to rescue the environment.
  • Setting the most affordable price: As products are resold after being renewed, their prices are bound to be very low. As a result, people are more inclined to buy those products. If retailers also change their pricing, then they can attract more customers.
  • Selecting the sales wardrobe: exciting items are always well received by the customers. If two of the factors discussed above are strictly followed then any item in a retail store can easily get sold. As a result, retail owners can also earn more if more products get sold.

The rise of e-commerce doesn’t necessarily mean that retailers who are traditionally operating their stores will vanish. Different customer bases might not prefer using second-hand items. In that case, retailers are the only organizations who can serve them according to their wants. As people are being more aware of the environmental damage, they are changing their way of shopping and desires. They are moving their taste towards eco-friendly fashion and reverse commerce will only rise as long as people accept this initiative and their motive remains the same, that is to save the environment.
