Japan’s consumer sees positive growth in December 2023

In December 2023, Japan’s consumer confidence index exhibited a noteworthy upswing, registering a 37.2, marking a 1.1-point surge from the previous month, according to the Cabinet Office. This positive development reflects an optimistic change in consumer sentiment across various key domains.

The consumer confidence index’s essential components, the consumer perception indexes, showed improvements across the board. After rising by 1.6 points, the overall livelihood index came to 35.7. Expectations for income growth increased by 0.8 points to 39.6, while employment confidence slightly increased to 41.9 (up 0.6 points).

Notably, the willingness to purchase durable goods witnessed a significant boost, soaring by 1.3 points to 31.4.

Regarding price expectations for the upcoming year, public response was mixed. The percentage of individuals anticipating price rises in December slightly decreased by 0.8 percentage points, settling at 90.8 percent.

Conversely, those expecting prices to remain unchanged increased by 0.9 percentage points, reaching 4.3 percent. The proportion of people anticipating price decreases saw a marginal decline of 0.2 percentage points, standing at 2.6 percent, as reported by the Cabinet Office.
