AR Trend Watch: Transparency

Over the past several seasons, the bold transparency trend has steadily evolved from a provocative statement into an accepted expression of sensuality, with lace and sheer fabrics gaining more mainstream visibility.

Initially sparking controversy, the erotic undertones of these fabrics have gradually softened, making way for broader acceptance. By Spring/Summer 2025, this trend is poised for widespread adoption, filtering beyond niche markets and into the mass market.

What started as a daring, avant-garde concept has become a reflection of the growing influence of body positivity and a rejection of conventional modesty in fashion. Designers have continued to experiment with translucent garments, layering diaphanous materials over the body, showcasing both subtle sensuality and bold statements through lace, mesh and sheers.

The trend is being interpreted in a variety of concepts ranging from layering, which incorporates sheer fabrics in layered constructions, creating depth while maintaining an element of modesty. Lightweight materials like tulle, organza and chiffon are layered over bralettes, bodycon silhouettes or cut-out dresses.

Lace, a key element of this trend, is taking centre stage in collections by brands such as Simone Rocha and Erdem. Instead of being designated to eveningwear or lingerie, lace is now being utilised in head-to-toe ensembles, including skirts, suits and even outerwear. These designs often mix lace with unexpected materials, such as leather or structured cotton, for a modern twist on an otherwise traditional fabric.

Many designers are also integrating transparency into structured pieces, adding a sharp edge to the softness. At Givenchy, transparent panels were incorporated into blazers and suits, providing a contrast between the formal structure of tailoring and the delicacy of sheer inserts. Similarly, Mugler continues to dominate with its body-hugging silhouettes featuring transparent cut-outs. Mixed media and playful textures come alive in collections by brands such as Marine Serre and JW Anderson who are mixing sheer fabrics with unconventional textures like PVC, sequins and metallics.

As brands embrace inclusivity and diversity, the transparency trend aligns with this evolving mindset, allowing consumers to connect more deeply with fashion that reflects their confidence and individuality.
