Marks & Spencer has announced the launch of its very first sustainability innovation competition, which is open to both start-ups and scale-ups.

The British retailer is searching for partners with a focus on technology to assist it build on the progress it has made in the area of sustainability and realize its aim of being net zero by the year 2040.

Marks & Spencer will collaborate with the innovation and investment firm True to search for ideas and technologies that either “encourage more sustainable behaviors amongst its customers” or assist the retailer in “achieving further efficiencies in its agricultural supply chains.” Both of these goals are important to the company.

Companies have the option of applying for either of the two projects, with the best solution for each assignment being picked for a proof of concept and trial across Marks & Spencer, with the potential for additional roll outs.

In a statement, the head of the innovation unit at Marks & Spencer, known as Ignite, said the following: “Calling all start-ups, we’re on the hunt for your latest breakthrough or technology, which will help us lessen our influence on tomorrow’s world.”

“In exchange, we can make an idea a reality and provide a trial backed by the scale of Marks & Spencer as a global store. Along the road, we will provide support from our dedicated Ignite innovation team.” As we go forward with fostering a culture of innovation within Marks & Spencer, we can’t wait to hear all of your creative suggestions.
